Day 5

12 October, 2001:

Heading home. We visited a couple of shops while in Haiti and had a chance to see some really beautiful artwork. I bought some hand-painted rocks and shells, and a beautiful carved statue of the Madonna. Others on our trip purchased paintings, metal sculptures, woven baskets, and other items. On our last day, we had about an hour in the airport gift shops. Nearly everyone left with a yellow box containing Haitian rum.

On the flight to Miami, I prayed with two missionaries from Florida who had come with their hammers and nails and spent a day building homes. I told them about Food for the Poor and our trip to St. Michael the Archangel. I gave them my information packet (which is why I can't share it with you until I get another copy), and hopefully they will be able to introduce their church to the Food for the Poor mission.

A bus ride from Miami to Fort Lauderdale for a several hour layover, and then we learn that bad weather in Houston has forced a delay. We spend the evening laughing with each other as we settle back into our normal lives, but knowing deep in our hearts that for the second time in about a month, "normal" for us has been redefined.

While waiting to hear about our flight, a young woman wearing an airport ID badge noticed our yellow boxes and came over to say hello. She is from Haiti and now works in the US, sending money back home to her family. She asked about our trip and when we told her, she got tears in her eyes and said "Thank you!". She was truly grateful that we had visited her country and were now heading home to tell its story.

We arrived home at about 2 A.M. on Saturday, 13 October, about four hours later than our original schedule. We had already begun telling story of Haiti. Now, I have told you.

What will you do about it?
